How small opportunities for independence help children build confidence, resilience, and lifelong skills.
One of the greatest gifts we can give our children isn’t doing more for them—it’s believing they are capable of doing more for themselves.
As parents, it is only natural to want to help. We tie the shoes because we’re in a hurry, pour the milk to avoid a spill, or solve a problem before our child has the chance to try. While these small acts come from love, they can also take away valuable opportunities for children to build confidence and independence.
In Montessori, we often say, “Never help a child with a task at which they feel they can succeed.” Children develop confidence by doing, not by watching. Every time they button a coat, help prepare a snack, water a plant, sweep up a spill, or carry their own backpack, they are learning much more than the task itself. They are developing problem-solving skills, perseverance, responsibility, and the quiet confidence that comes from thinking, “I can do this.”
This doesn’t mean expecting perfection. Mistakes are part of learning. A little spilled water while pouring a drink or a shirt buttoned the wrong way may seem like small mishaps, but they are valuable opportunities to build resilience, patience, and persistence. When we allow children the time and space to try again, we send a powerful message: I believe in you.
This week, look for a few opportunities to step back instead of stepping in. Invite your child to set the table, help prepare a simple meal, dress themselves, or tidy up after an activity. These everyday moments may take a little longer, but they are building skills and confidence that will last a lifetime.
